What's Available Here?
In addition to newly available resources, the databases on the 'BFHG Databases CD' that has been available to members for some years are gradually being updated and added to this site. The CD will be phased out when that is complete.
This area is new for our website and we hope to add to the current offerings over the next few months.
How to use the Members' Area
SEARCH
To search for a particular name in a database, enter the surname (and the given name if you wish) then click the grey button to return a list of entries that match your search criteria.
WILD CARDS
Remember that names were often misspelled in the original documents we have transcribed or we may have mistyped them when entering this data.
To widen your search, enter the first few characters, or a part of a name and use the percent sign as a wild card to represent zero or more characters. e.g. To search for all Thompson or Thomson or Thomsen - search for Thom%s%n or just Thom%. This would also find Thompkinson - if it was in the database.
By searching for % without any characters you can browse through the entire database!
In addition to the % wild card, you can also use the underline character _ to represent a single character so searching for Thomps_n would find Thompson and Thompsen but not Thomson.
VIEWING DETAILS
Most databases have more information than you see in the initial list. Click on the link to view the extra details available. The details normally appear in a pop-up window. If the window does not open, check the settings of your browser and/or internet security software which may be responsible for the window not opening.
Some details windows have a print button but if not, you can usually print the contents by pressing Ctrl-P. You can usually also copy then paste the contents of the detail window.
ERRORS
Great care has been taken to ensure that data was entered accurately. However, unfortunately we are not perfect. If you see an obvious error, please advise the webmaster who will check and correct identified errors when possible.
